Hungary labels EU’s Ukraine funding request ‘astonishing’

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticized the EU’s recent request for additional financial support to Ukraine, calling the European Commission president’s appeal "astonishing."

Orban said he received a letter from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding Ukraine’s significant financing gap, in which she urged member states "to send more money."

"It's astonishing," Orban wrote on social media platform X on Monday.

He argued that at a time when it is clear that "a war mafia is siphoning off" European taxpayers’ funds, von der Leyen’s suggestion to increase contributions instead of demanding "real oversight or suspending payments" was misguided.

"This whole matter is a bit like trying to help an alcoholic by sending them another crate of vodka. Hungary has not lost its common sense," he added.

Von der Leyen’s letter to EU leaders outlined potential ways to address Ukraine’s funding shortfall, including loans backed by frozen Russian assets.

The correspondence follows an EU agreement last month to meet Ukraine’s "pressing financial needs" for the next two years.
