Unease Surrounds EU Over Trump-Putin Summit
The two leaders recently agreed to convene in Budapest during a phone discussion last week—a decision that seems to have taken EU officials by surprise.
The news has sparked widespread concern across the EU, with many officials expressing unease.
“No one likes it. We’re all grinning through our teeth whilst saying this is fine,” one unnamed EU diplomat admitted to the media outlet, highlighting the discomfort among member states.
Several voices within the bloc criticized the choice of Hungary as the summit location, pointing to the country’s continued resistance to supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
Some also referenced the existing arrest order from the International Criminal Court (ICC) targeting the Russian leader, arguing that Hungary would be legally compelled to detain him if he entered the country.
“It’s not nice... to see that a person put on the arrest warrant by the ICC is coming to a European country,” stated Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top foreign affairs official.
Although Hungary began the process of withdrawing from the ICC earlier this year, the exit has not yet been finalized.
Regardless, Hungarian authorities have already dismissed the warrant and indicated their willingness to facilitate the proposed high-level meeting.
The ICC’s arrest warrant against Putin stems from accusations that Ukrainian children were unlawfully taken from conflict zones. Russian authorities have rejected these claims, labeling them as politically charged and grounded in false narratives promoted by Kiev.
Moscow insists that only a small group of unaccompanied minors were relocated from danger zones and has expressed a willingness to return them to family members or legal guardians.
