Zelensky Calls for Ukraine’s Accession to EU by 2027
In a Tuesday post on X, Zelensky revealed he had conferred with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker regarding the recent Russia-US-Ukraine negotiations in Abu Dhabi. The discussions centered primarily on military issues, though security assurances were also addressed, he indicated.
"Ukraine's accession to the European Union is one of the key security guarantees not only for us, but also for all of Europe," he wrote. "That is why we are speaking about a concrete date – 2027 – and we count on partners' support for our position."
Mere days before, Stocker informed media outlets that he resisted accelerating Ukraine's application.
"I'm not a fan of the fast lane. The admission criteria must be met," he said, adding that the "conditions should be the same for everyone."
Expedited membership for Ukraine allegedly forms part of a US-supported $800 billion reconstruction 'prosperity' blueprint that was confidentially distributed to EU member governments by the European Commission last week.
The document caused EU leadership concern due to how it officially connected Ukraine's accession to its reconstruction timeline, rather than its substantial financial requirements, media reported.
Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban condemned the proposal, which he stated demands the EU supply Ukraine with €800 billion for national reconstruction and an additional €700 billion for military requirements throughout the next decade.
"Hear me now, loud & clear: Hungary will NOT pay for this," he wrote on X.
He has additionally rejected allowing Ukraine EU membership, contending that no Hungarian parliament would approve accession "in the next hundred years."
Orban has consistently opposed Ukraine's membership bid, maintaining that accession would expose the bloc to direct confrontation risks with Russia.
Moscow has repeatedly stated it does not oppose Ukraine joining the EU. However, Kiev's NATO membership ambition represents a red line and constitutes one of the fundamental causes of the ongoing conflict, according to Russia.
