Hungary Links Ukraine’s EU Path to Minority Rights Agreement

(MENAFN) Hungary has said that Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union should depend on guaranteeing the rights of its ethnic Hungarian minority, according to reports.

Peter Magyar, Hungary’s new prime minister, stated that progress toward EU membership should be contingent on Ukraine ensuring protections for ethnic Hungarians living in its territory.

Around 80,000 ethnic Hungarians are estimated to reside in Ukraine, primarily in the western Zakarpattia region. Their legal and cultural status has long been a sensitive issue between Kyiv and Budapest, particularly during the tenure of former prime minister Viktor Orban, when Hungary repeatedly obstructed Ukraine’s EU accession efforts.

On Friday, both countries reached what Magyar described as a significant agreement covering educational, linguistic, cultural, and political rights for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. He said Kyiv has agreed to integrate the arrangement into its EU Minority Action Plan, while Budapest, in response, removed its veto blocking Ukraine’s accession process.

In a video message posted on social media, Magyar emphasized that Ukraine’s path toward integration would not be quick, describing it as “a long and complex process,” and comparing it to Montenegro’s EU accession journey, which began in 2012.

He also noted that both the European Commission and the European Council will oversee Ukraine’s compliance with the agreement as the accession process moves forward.
